About me
Paweł Kińczyk
An engineer and BIM consultant with unrestricted construction licences in the sanitary specialty. Professionally I am first of all a BIM manager, but I prefer to call myself a handyman: I support teams in using software, make sure information flows according to the standard and without disruption, and automate engineers' work with my own tools, from AutoLISP routines for AutoCAD and Dynamo scripts to calculation apps.
Why I do this
I can't stand boring, repetitive tasks. When I see that work I do by hand can be automated, I can't walk past it.
It started with sanitary sewer profiles. If one pipe dropped lower, the next ones had to be redrawn. For a large estate with a two-level garage and several buildings, that meant a week or even two weeks of work. I decided it couldn't go on like that and wrote a simple AutoLISP routine for AutoCAD. It drew pipes with a slope based on the plans and design guidelines and marked the positions of tees and risers. It was only the first version of the script, and the work still took half the time.
I leave the engineering to the engineer and the tedious work to the computer.
Since then it has been my daily work. Professionally I am first of all a BIM manager, but I prefer to call myself a handyman. I support teams in using software and make sure information flows according to the standard and without disruption. On top of that I automate engineers' work: from Excel spreadsheets and AutoLISP routines for AutoCAD, through Dynamo scripts for Revit, to full calculation applications and add-ons for software.
The potential in the construction industry is huge. Every project contains tasks that involve retyping, completing and checking data, and require neither specialist education nor many years of experience. Every hour saved on such work is an hour for solving real problems and developing skills.
It is not about replacing the engineer. It is about giving them tools that let them do valuable work instead of filling in numbers in Excel.
What I build on
Construction licences
Unrestricted, for design and site supervision in the sanitary specialty.
Distinguished master's thesis
Distinction for a master's thesis, Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Gdańsk University of Technology, October 2021.
Tools proven at work
AutoLISP routines, Dynamo scripts, spreadsheets and calculation apps, plus the blog and YouTube channel where I show how to build them.
